We’ve just returned from a short winter break. Our two centre holiday, Wooler and Tayport, was an experience made more dramatic and exciting by the quantity of snow we encountered. We left Tiree just before Christmas – covered in a thin coat of snow and ice – an unusual and rare occurrence and a great talking point on the island. However, the Tiree snow was only a harbinger of what was to come. As we travelled south through Argyll we could see that the hills had a deep covering – although the roads were clear. We ran into snow storms and worsening road conditions at Dunbar. As we approached Wooler the car coped well with the final scramble through deep snow – and we arrived safely and greatly relieved.
We enjoyed the beautiful snow covered hills and valleys of north Northumberland and had a restful and quiet break in a wonderfully warm house. Throughout our mainland visit I was reminded of the lyrics of an early Paul Simon song.
A winter’s day, in a deep and dark December;
I am alone, gazing from my window to the streets below
On a freshly fallen, silent shroud of snow….
