We're experiencing the 'tail-end' of Hurricane Katia on the island. We've had fearsome winds and heavy showers all morning and the forecast is for worsening conditions over the next twenty-four hours. The ferry has been cancelled and the plane couldn't land. Such is life on an island when the weather decides to step in and misbehave.
I've been interested to see the names given to the Atlantic tropical storms this year before Katia drew our attention. Since 1953 these hurricanes have been named by the National Hurricane Centre and are selected from six lists - used in rotation - so there may be another Katia in 2017. The names for this year are - Arlene, Bret, Cindy, Don, Emily, Franklin, Gert, Harvey, Irene, Jose, Katia, Lee, Maria, Ophelia, Phillipe, Rina, Sean, Tammy, Vince and Whitney.
The only time that there is a change to the six rotating lists is if a storm proves to be so deadly or costly that the future use of its name on a different storm would be considered inappropriate for reasons of sensitivity. Retired names in recent years have been Dennis, Katrina, Rita, Stan, Wilma, Dean, Felix, Noel, Gustav, Ike and Paloma. This motley crew have obviously ended up on the naughty step!!!
I was just thinking of you when I read your blog. Hope you're all safe as Katia blows herself out!
