I’ve been reading Guy Claxton’s presentation about education given at the University of Winchester last year. It was on the theme of “Change Is Here To Stay”. In his comments he describes one school’s response… "It’s our job not just to help children master literacy and numeracy but to prepare them for a very turbulent and complex world. We are failing if we don’t prepare them with the skills they need to cope with uncertainty; to cope with differing perspectives; to cope with working with different kinds of people; to ask good questions. Our children are at a very crucial age. We need to get those skills right into the DNA of the way our children think and learn – before it’s too late.”
I’m impressed by this philosophy. It seems that this does not just apply to children as they learn – but it’s for all of us throughout our lives.
Change is always hard to deal with. As the new year begins I’ve been thinking about the changes that have been happening globally, nationally and locally and I’m hoping that we can all find the skills to cope with uncertainly, different perspectives and different people – and that we ask good questions.
